GM Vladimir Georgiev (36) of Macedonia became a close victor of The Open Norwegian Championship 2012 in Fagernes. He secured his honor and trophy, but had to share the prize-money with five other players also finishing at 6½ points. Bulgarian Grandmaster Vladimir Georgiev has represented Macedonia since 2002 and is a champion of both countries.

The second Norwegian Chess Festival in Fagernes was another success event with an exciting program and 250 players of various strengths and ages participating. Both the playing and living conditions at Norway’s leading new chess hotel Quality Hotel & Resort Fagernes again proved first class.

The Norwegian Chess Federation together with Tromsø Chess Olympiad 2014 and FIDE stages a FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar during the Fagernes festival, from May 1 to 6.

Lecturers are such capacities as the FIDE Secretary general IA Mr. Ignatius Leong (Singapore) and IA Alog Burstein (Israel). The practical management of the seminar is handled by IA Mr. Morten Sand, who is legal advisor of the Tromsø olympiad 2014 organisation and a former president of the Norwegian Chess Federation.

The seminar is part of preparations for the Tromsø 2014 chess olympiad. The participants are active and well qualified chess arbiters from Norway and Sweden. The seminar has an extensive daily programme and will be rounded off with a test of the candidates.

Sergey Tiviakov (38) from Netherlands is the highest rated player of the festival, with his present FIDE rating of 2624. From origin Tiviakov is a Russian from Krasnodar, and he won Olympic gold with Russia at the 1994 Moscow chess olympiad. Later he has settled in Netherlands and won the European team championship with his new country in 2001 and 2005. In the year 2008 he crowned his career till now gaining the individual European championship. Several times he has been amongst the 30 highest rated players in the world, with 2699 from 2005 as his highest rating figure so far.

Sergey Tiviakov participated in several Norwegian tournaments. The most impressive result was his 8 1/2 points from 9 against Magnus Carlsen and others at the Gausdal Classics tournament 2005:

At Gjøvik 2008-09 Sergey tied for second in the strong main tournament, behind Jon Ludvig Hammer. Now we wish very welcome to Norway again!

Also Lars Karlsson returns to Norway. He won the Open Norwegian Championship of 1979(!), and recently he placed 4th as best Swede on homeground at the Rilton Cup 2010-11 in Stockholm.'

The first edition of “Norsk Sjakkfestival” has got an increasing and satisfactory number of participants to be its first year, and still it is possible to sign in for all the tournaments of the festival program. The A Group of the Open Norwergian Championship 2011 has got 78 participants by now, and 10 of them Grandmasters, headed by the highest rated player Sergey Tiviakov (2624). GM Lars Karlsson, Sweden has substituted Carsten Høi of Denmark who had to withdraw.

The “Fagernes Grand Prix” starting on Sunday, has got 46 players on the starting list, and the B and C groups of the Open Norwegian Championships, from Wednesday to Sunday, 45 participantes. In addition there is the Children’s Grand Prix on Wednesday and Fagernes Easter blitz chess Thursday evening. All the tournaments take place at the festival hotel Quality Hotel & Resort Fagernes.

We also expect quite some visits from interested people staying in the mountains around Fagernes (Valdres) during the Easter week (a Norwegian habit). This year the skiing conditions in the mountains will probalby be clearly less perfect than the chess conditions at Fagernes. Our tournaments are open to players at all levels, and same applies to chess training, a pure amateur tournament, and several lectures on chess and chess history included in the festival program.

Welcome to the first Norwegian Chess Festival to be held during the Easter week of 2011, in the fine surroundings of Norway’s new “chess hotel” Quality Hotel & Resort Fagernes.
The Festival includes The open Norwegian championships of 2011 and several other events for all friends of chess, irrespective of their level, from Beginner to Grandmaster.

Fagernes has a central placement in Southern Norway, with good road and bus connections from Oslo and Bergen, plus a few flights to Fagernes Airport Leirin. We also offer a charter bus connection (please preorder!) directly from and to Oslo Airport Gardermoen.
